For anglers looking to combine the best of both worlds, pairing braided line with wire leaders is an ideal option. Not only are wire leaders more durable and resistant to abrasions than monofilament varieties, they also don’t have as much stretch, which is great for when you’re aiming your lures or reeling in a catch. On the other hand, braided lines exhibit minimal line stretch and offer increased sensitivity to bites and strikes, all while providing added power for casting. Thus, with this combination, you can gain the benefit of both strong durability and superior sensitivity.
Attaching wire leader to braid is an effortless process, with numerous approaches that can be used. The most prevalent way of doing so is tying a double uni knot, otherwise known as a uni to uni knot. This knot is strong and dependable, easy to weave together in just a few steps. Start by passing the conclusion of the wire leader through the hook’s eye, then be precise and perform 5-6 wraps around the straight part of the wire leader. Grab the remnant of the wire leader and fasten it within the loop shaped, then moisten the knot and pull it securely A smidgen of messiness can be left on purpose for additional protection, or you can even cut off the extra wire leader.
If you frequently angle with braided line, mastering the FG knot may be worth the effort. Though more complex than the uni to uni knot, it is strong, and its smaller profile reduces the risk of snagging on aquatic foliage and other impediments. Making the FG knot begins with guiding the wire leader end through the hook eye and forming a loop with it. After that, feed in the end of the braid through said loop, then from 5-6 wraps around the standing portion of the braid. Eventually, put in the braid end through the wire leader circuit one final time. Now to finish it off, dampen it and pull it tight.
